Be honest, seriously, be honest. How much are you pleased that Glasgow won in order to wind up the usual whingers who are always talking Scotland down? I know that I, for one, had a chuckle at the thought myself!

I'm happy for Glasgow, if they are happy.
On a more immediate note, I never wanted the Olympics to come to London- the massive hikes in construction costs that are now being bandied about were only too predictable.

That this will irk said whingers is certainly a benefit. But I am genuinely delighted for Glasgow. Anyone who knows that city will recognise that it is a deserving winner of this honour and the perfect host for this event.
Add to that the political and economic benefits for Scotland and this is exactly what the country needed at this time. I'm just glad we have a Scottish government which has the right priorities and will not defer to party bosses in London but will put every effort into making the games a resounding success.

I agree with that, but I do have reservations. I have a problem with these types of things, i.e. big grand projects of this size as a driver for regeneration. Many of these projects have the look of ‘false tits on a sixty year old woman‘ look about them. They tend to look impressive but do little to hide or address the real underlying issues. A new stadium in the East of Glasgow is going to look great and two thousand new houses are never unwelcome, but Glasgow needs more and longer term regeneration projects. The one thing they DO need is real, sustainable, high quality jobs. It is no good introducing a few yuppy flats. If the ‘regeneration’ stops when the last medal is awarded then we will find ourselves back to square one.

LoL
I think you're right - the Olympic Games has meant actually buying tower blocks in east London and knocking them down. Now, I have reservations about such type of accomodation - but at least it was there and being used, and the number of new units will not be built as fast as the ones knocked down. When I see the spiralling costs of construction for the Olympic Games, it just makes me wonder why the funds might not have been ploughed straight into rebuilding housing - mixed private/social housing on a 50/50 basis , as Ken Livingstone would prefer - rather than this grandiose project now envisaged, which if history is any guide, will never properly show any kind of a satisfactory return. I think the Olympic bid was at least in part Blair's own hope for a political legacy.

You make some valid points. But we have some reason to hope that the present Scottish government might do things differently. Although the fact that Glasgow is still a Labour fiefdom may be cause to temper such hopes.
I have to admit that I know very little about the structural plans, so I must refrain from further comment at this time. I suspect it is a topic that will come up again.

At least 'C'tpain Bob' is unlikely to go overboard to 'rescue' the games like the time the games were held on the other end of the M8!

That would be good. And not completely impossible.
